ABOUT US

Meet Clayton Middlebury

Originally established in 1934 as Schult Homes, Clayton Middlebury has always stood for high-quality and affordable manufactured homes. After combining with Marlette Homes and being inducted into the Clayton Manufactured Housing (CMH) Inc. family in 2004, Clayton Middlebury has worked tirelessly to ensure quality construction and consumer protection by offering electrical, heating, cooling, and plumbing standards that far exceed industry requirements.

Quality and Innovation Since 1934

Since the beginning, Clayton Middlebury has been a persistent advocate for building premium products in both construction and consumer protection. Now, over eight decades later, that focus continues to shape our work.

1930 - 1940

Early Innovators

More practical than plush, the early Schult homes included necessities such as coal heating stoves, portable water tanks, sofa beds, and dinette chairs. Leading the industry in revolutionary design, steel frames, forced-air heating, built-in electrical appliances, and complete interior plumbing were all brought to market in Schult homes.

During WWII, Schult became the brand of choice for emergency sectional housing – with more than 2,000 homes built for the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). At the same time, luxury models were becoming more popular internationally – including a 50-ft portable home produced for the King Farouk I of Egypt.

Going “Modern”

The 1950s saw a décor refresh, with “modernized” dinette and bedroom sets, fluorescent lighting, Venetian blinds, and modern plumbing. While the 1960s and 70s saw the introduction of superior production techniques such as “uni-strength” construction to their home building facilities as well as new floor plan layouts – such as the popular front kitchen plan.

1980 - 2000s

Say Hello to Clayton Middlebury

By the 1980s manufactured homes had become competitive with site-built homes in both appearance and construction standards. After becoming part of the Clayton Manufacturing Homes (CMH) family and being renamed Clayton Middlebury in 2004, an emphasis on maintenance-free features and energy-saving designs set Clayton Middlebury apart.

A wide variety of spacious floor plans, modular housing, solid construction, and leading-edge interiors (such as tape and textured painted drywall, architectural windows, and cathedral ceilings) built the strength of the Clayton Middlebury name.
